THE FIRST FOOD PROGRAMME
The First Food Programme offers staff and childminders in Early Years settings, training on food and nutrition for children aged 0-5 years old.
All of the First Food programme activity helps each setting deliver the foundation framework, help parents do better with their children and
deliver a healthier start in life. Importantly, The Wiggly Worm work in this area encourages the development and ownership of a whole setting
approach to food policy.
There are currently no official guidelines surrounding nutrition for children of pre-school age in English settings. As a result of this many
children's centres, nurseries and child minders are offering an array of food products and education with a huge variation in quality and
standards. The purpose of this programme is to support the early year settings in making healthier choices and giving them the resources and
guidance to implement them. It is about building on the food they already offer and encouraging them to improve their food ethos.
Our support of the First Food Programme includes the delivery of a two hour masterclass to staff that features a fun cookery demonstration,
information and guidance session and quiz. This is also supported with the development and implementation of a First Food award scheme as well
as support in embracing a specifically designed resource pack.
We are grateful to funding streams from Gloucestershire Food Vision and Gloucestershire County Council who have taken us on as partners in
such innovative work.
