WORKING WITH OFFENDERS

The Wiggly Worm uses food as a tool to encourage people to do better. What better section of society to work with than those who offend. We have experience of working with young offenders, exculuded youngsters and those who have experienced over 25 years in a prison or institution who are being considered for release back into society.

We offer support and guidance in food preparation and cooking and its importance as a life skill. Many of the offenders will have done very little cooking and may not have cooked for some time. This project is in place to equip them with the skills they need to survive after release.

Delivered on site this project is tailored to the needs of each group. This project encourages taste, debate and dialogue. Through diversity in food choices it stimulates commitment respect and trust. The recipes used in these projects can be nutritionally proofed to meet the specific dietary requirements of our target group.

Many long term prisoners will not have experienced modern tastes, flavours or techniques in cookery required today to survive. Many will not have used food as a way to socialise or have been in a position to make choices about what they buy, cook and eat. Many will never have had bank accounts and considered food budgets amongst their need. Our work can overcome all these barriers.

We are grateful to Gloucestershire Adult Education and a local Bail House for helping us to develop our work in this area.
